Regenerative Tourism in West Coast Sanctuaries
Recreation and tourism are powerful economic engines, supporting local, regional, national, and international economies. These drivers bolster communities near many national marine sanctuaries. NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries is the trustee for a network of underwater parks encompassing more than 620,000 square miles of marine and Great Lakes waters. The spectacular wildlife and allure of outdoor activities make national marine sanctuaries destinations for both recreation and tourism. Regenerative Tourism aims to leave a positive impact on communities, and ecosystems as a powerful economic driver in especially fragile and vulnerable coastal communities. It goes beyond sustainable tourism and focuses on the individual adventurer who can give back to help create a better, healthier, more resilient, and just ecosystem and community.
The National Marine Sanctuary System is an ideal place for modeling the power of destination stewardship and the marine economy, starting with regenerative tourism and recreation to protect both cultural and natural systems. Destinations, such as national marine sanctuaries, promote a regenerative economy centered on sustainable tourism and equitable experiences. They support healthy marine environments and spectacular wildlife, a prosperous blue economy and thriving businesses, providing recreation opportunities and leading to enhanced quality of life for their communities.
Join the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and our Monterey Bay Chapter, along with national luminaries in destination stewardship, to explore models for regenerative tourism and recreation and how they can contribute to prosperous, resilient communities, thriving habitats, and advance the blue economy on the West Coast. The Blue Beacon will feature keynotes and engaging plenaries followed by an evening reception. This event builds on the momentum from the 2023 Blue Beacon: Reimagining Tourism and Recreation through Destination Stewardship.
