Embracing My Roots: How My Heritage Inspires Me to Create Change

Growing up as a Mexican-American in Watsonville, California, my journey has been deeply shaped by my heritage and the dreams of my immigrant parents. My family came to the United States with hopes of the American Dream, seeking better opportunities and a brighter future. While my hometown was predominantly Latino, there was a noticeable lack of representation and role models who made significant changes within our community. This gap in representation fueled my desire to be the change I wished to see.

A Heritage of Resilience and Pride

My roots extend beyond my birth town–Santa Cruz, reaching into the rich landscapes of Las Sierras in Michoacán and the vibrant coastal beauty of Nayarit. From these regions, I inherit a profound connection to both the land and the ocean. Michoacán’s mountains and Nayarit’s shores symbolize resilience and adaptability—traits that have guided my personal and professional journey. Growing up, I felt a strong sense of responsibility to honor these traditions and the sacrifices made by my parents.

The Power of Representation

In a community where few Latinos were visibly driving change, it was easy to feel invisible. Figures like Cesar Chavez, who fought for workers’ rights and championed social justice, were distant icons rather than immediate role models. I lacked mentors who looked like me or shared my background, which made it challenging to envision my own potential impact. Yet, this absence became a powerful motivator for me. I realized that to create the change I wanted to see, I had to become the role model I never had.

Aspiring to Be the Person I Needed

My journey has been about more than just achieving personal goals; it’s about becoming the person I needed during my formative years. I have made it my mission to inspire and support the youth and others along the way in my community, particularly those who might feel overlooked or underestimated. By stepping into roles that allow me to advocate for representation and create opportunities, I aim to pave the way for future generations.

Building Bridges and Making a Difference

My commitment to Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is deeply rooted in my desire to
give back to the community and environment that shaped me. Through mentoring, volunteering, and
leading initiatives, I strive to bridge gaps and foster a more inclusive atmosphere. One of my proudest achievements in my career thus far is coordinating three-part field trips with our Monterey Bay Explorers program, which offers free transportation for 4th and 5th graders from Watsonville and includes activities out in the Wharf and exploring our exhibits. Collaborating with former teachers, I create enriching experiences for students who may not have had the opportunity to visit the beach or explore our center. These field trips not only connect students to their local environment but also inspire a love for nature and conservation.

Abrazando Mis Raíces: Cómo Mi Herencia Me Inspira a Crear Cambio

Al crecer como mexicana-estadounidense en Watsonville, CA, mi trayectoria ha estado profundamente moldeada por mi herencia y los sueños de mis padres inmigrantes. Mi familia vino a los Estados Unidos con la esperanza del Sueño Americano, buscando mejores oportunidades y un futuro más brillante. Aunque mi ciudad natal era predominantemente latina, había una notable falta de representación y modelos a seguir que hicieran cambios significativos en nuestra comunidad. Esta brecha en la representación alimentó mi deseo de ser el cambio que deseaba ver.

Una Herencia de Resiliencia y Orgullo

Mis raíces se extienden más allá de mi ciudad natal, Santa Cruz, alcanzando los ricos paisajes de Las Sierras en Michoacán y la vibrante belleza costera de Nayarit. De estas regiones heredó una profunda conexión tanto con la tierra como con el mar. Las montañas de Michoacán y las costas de Nayarit simbolizan la resiliencia y la adaptabilidad, cualidades que han guiado mi trayectoria personal y profesional. Al crecer, sentí una fuerte responsabilidad de honrar estas tradiciones y los sacrificios realizados por mis padres.

El Poder de la Representación

En una comunidad donde pocos latinos estaban visiblemente impulsando el cambio, era fácil sentirse invisible. Figuras como César Chávez, que luchó por los derechos de los trabajadores y defendió la justicia social, eran íconos distantes en lugar de modelos a seguir inmediatos. Me faltaban mentores que se parecieran a mí o compartieran mi origen, lo que hacía difícil imaginar el impacto que yo podría tener. Sin embargo, esta ausencia se convirtió en un poderoso motivador para mí. Me di cuenta de que para crear el cambio que quería ver, tenía que convertirme en el modelo a seguir que nunca tuve.

Aspirando a Ser la Persona que Necesité
Mi viaje ha sido más que simplemente alcanzar metas personales; se trata de convertirme en la persona que necesitaba durante mis años formativos. He hecho de mi misión inspirar y apoyar a los jóvenes y a otros en mi comunidad, especialmente a aquellos que podrían sentirse pasados por alto o subestimados. Al asumir roles que me permiten abogar por la representación y crear oportunidades, mi objetivo es allanar el camino para las generaciones futuras.

Construyendo Puentes y Marcando la Diferencia
Mi compromiso con el Santuario Marino Nacional de Monterey Bay está profundamente heredado en mi deseo de compensar a la comunidad y al ambiente que me formó. A través de la mentoría, el voluntariado y el liderazgo de iniciativas, me esfuerzo por cerrar brechas y fomentar un ambiente más inclusivo. Uno de mis mayores logros en mi carrera hasta ahora es coordinar excursiones en tres partes con nuestro programa Monterey Bay Explorers, que ofrece transporte gratuito para estudiantes de 4º y 5º grado de Watsonville. Colaborando con maestros pasados que tuve, creando experiencias beneficiosas para los estudiantes que quizás no han tenido la oportunidad de visitar la playa o explorar nuestro centro. Estas excursiones no solo conectan a los estudiantes con su ambiente local, sino que también inspiran un amor por la naturaleza y la conservación.
