We know that we cannot truly create a healthy future for our waters and communities without addressing justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI), and that begins with the people and organizations working to secure that future. How would marine and freshwater science, management and policy change if our workplaces reflected the diversity of our nation?
Tackling this issue requires a critical look at where we work and whether the workplace culture is welcoming to all. There exist barriers in recruitment, hiring, and retention with which large environmental organizations and agencies are just beginning to grapple.
This plenary will examine the commitment to JEDI efforts within federal, research and nongovernmental institutions and agencies, impediments to employment, and strategies that will be necessary to accelerate hiring of underrepresented and underserved communities within the fields of science, policy and conservation.
Join Capitol Hill Ocean Week’s “Blue Introspection: Examining Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Ocean and Great Lakes Policy, Science, and Conservation” plenary, sponsored by COMPASS, for a discussion on the status of current efforts and barriers to be overcome. Whitney Tome, principal at The Raben Group, will moderate the panel that includes Andrés Jimenez of Green 2.0; Dr. Quentin Tyler of Michigan State University; Dr. Jalonne White-Newsome from George Washington University; Francisco Ollervides of the Green Leadership Trust; Leonard Pace of the Schmidt Ocean Institute; and Chanté Coleman from the National Wildlife Federation. Our speakers will explore what needs to be done to create and maintain a truly diverse workforce. Mark you calendars for Wednesday, June 9 from 11:00 AM – 12:10 PM EST to join the conversation at Capitol Hill Ocean Week.
