Nathan J. Bennett, Ph.D.

Dr. Nathan J. Bennett is a researcher, an educator, a facilitator and an independent consultant who works for various ocean and conservation-focused governmental, non-governmental and philanthropic organizations. Trained as an environmental social scientist and human-environment geographer, he has published more than 60 academic papers and book chapters on the human and governance dimensions of marine and terrestrial conservation, small-scale fisheries, climate change, coastal community development, and the blue economy. His work is global in scope – with past research and consulting projects in North America, Latin America, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the global oceans. Dr. Bennett is also the founder and principal investigator of The Peopled Seas Initiative and the Chair of the People and the Ocean Specialist Group for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
